The history of the town dates back to Roman times and both Maastricht and Nijmegen boast of being the oldest town of the Netherlands. Its long history is reflected in the historical city centre with various Roman and other period churches and their adjoining squares, the most famous of which is the Vrijthof with the basilica of St Servaas. Today Maastricht cherishes its image of “Burgundian” town, popular for shopping and recreation. Because of its university and various other institutes of higher education, including a conservatoire, an academy for painting and sculpture and an academy of dramatic art, it is also a town with many students. Maastricht is famous for its rich pub life and its numerous restaurants, including a number at a very high level. |
